Why Purple Emerald Ash Borer Traps?

Several folks have asked for more information on what the purple Emerald Ash Borer traps are used for. They enable scientists to map and analyze the spread of these beetles who have destroyed millions of ash trees. The trap uses Manuka oil as an attractant specifically designed to lure the Emerald Ash Borer beetles to it.  There is little hope for eradicating these pests but biocontrol and biosurveillance techniques can be effective in slowing down and controlling -- to some extent -- their spreading elsewhere.
